Tour de Fleece – Finished!

At the beginning of the month, July 6th to be exact, part of my spinning wheel broke. I contacted MerlinTree for a replacement part and he said he’d send it right away…except I was having issues with my email which caused a delay. I did not get the part until this past Saturday, late afternoon. I immediately changed out the broken part and then spun like a crazy lady for the rest of Saturday all day yesterday. I lost two weeks of spinning but I wasn’t going down without a fight!

Here are the yarns I managed to spin up Saturday and yesterday. I finished the last one at 11:45pm!

While I was spinning, I was putting finished skeins into a bin I had picked up for my craft area. When I took all the skeins out to take a group shot, my cat immediately jumped into it.

Here is the group shot of all the yarn I spun up in a little over a week. I spun up a total of 3.69 lbs (pounds!) of fiber. I won’t know yardage until I wash all the skeins. I don’t know when I’ll do that.

I am already looking forward to Spinzilla in October. Then the weekend after that is NY Sheep and Wool, a.k.a Rhinebeck. So I’ll get to restock up on fiber. Yay!

Tour de Fleece – Day Eight

I am still waiting for the replacement part for my wheel. Hopefully it has been shipped out and will arrive any day now. I had not spun for the past couple of days and I was already missing it.

I do have spindles, two Turkish spindles and two drop, so I decided to use one of them. I went with on of my Snyder Turkish spindles, the one I actually had not used yet. The reason I had not started spindling when my wheel broke is because I have a bad right shoulder do to a sports injury. I am right handed.

I started spinning anyway and ignored the pain in my shoulder. I probably should not have spun for so many hours straight (seven!) but when I spin, I hate stopping until I finish what I’m spinning. Spindling is so much slower than a wheel. It took me about seven hours to spin up 1.75 oz of fiber. I can normally do a whole Loop bump (avg between 5-6 oz) in an hour and a half.

Anyway, it is now done except for plying. I will not be plying on a spindle and may leave this as singles. It is still on the spindle but I want to show it off anyway to show that I’ve spun something!

This is my first time spinning one of these. I think it counts as pencil roving. Very easy and nice to spin. I’ll definitely pick up some more when I see them. The colors are great too. The colorway for this one is “Royal”.

I will probably spin some more on my Turk but I’ll try and be better about taking breaks. I’ll be going out at some point today to buy some veggies so that will be at least an hour break.

Tour de Fleece – Day Five

Tonight I almost finished spinning up another Loop bump, this one “Smoke & Mirrors.” I plan to ply it with another bump I spun up another time that is lighter shades of grey. Or I’ll ply it with River Rocks I spun the other day.

Smoke & Mirrors

I only have about an ounce or so left. It is a bit lighter than the light grey you see in the above picture. What stopped me from finishing?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

SNAP!

I have already sent a message to Merlin Tree in hopes of getting that leather part replaced. I tried spinning single treadle, but I just couldn’t get it to work. I have a team spin in tomorrow after work that I’ll be taking a Turkish spindle to instead.

Tour de Fleece – Day Four

I knew I would not get as much spinning done because of work, but I did get another 4oz spun up. This is a Loop cloud “Three Ring Circus”. Right now it is a single ply and I may keep it like that. Until I decide, I’ll keep it on the bobbin

It has lots of colors, sparkle, and shininess to it that you can see a bit in the picture. Here is what it looked like to start:

And here it is single ply:

“Three Ring Circus”

This was my first time spinning from a cloud. It was rather fun and I was able to grab whichever section I wanted to spread the color out. I’ll definitely be buying another cloud from Loop in the future. Probably at Rhinebeck in October.

Tour de Fleece – Day Three

Today I finished spinning that second Loop bump and got it plied up. It’s super squishy already. I can’t wait to see how soft it gets once it’s been set.

“River Rocks”

I just finished spinning up this soft and pretty Alpaca from Alpaca Obsession.  It’s only 2oz so I’m not expecting too much yardage, but I’ll find something to make with it. I have another small skein in almost the same colors I bought from the same person last year. I’ll put them together.

“Coralple”

This is all the spinning I did today. Not much as I was too distracted by non fiber things today. At least I got something done, so I’m happy. I was also poking around to see what else I have to play with.

Stay tuned to see what I spin up next!

Tour de Fleece – Day Two

Lots more spinning done today!

This one was made from three different batts that were in the July 2015 Spinning Box. The theme was “Lazy Days of Summer”. I’m calling the finished yarn “Ice Cream Social.”

This one was using the main fiber from the same box. “Watermelon”

I have started spinning a Loop double bump. The colorway is “River Rocks”. I got the first bump spun, will do the second tomorrow, then two ply together. We’ll see how close I get or if I end up with more on one bobbin than the other.

One bump down!

I almost started on the other bump tonight, but I was starting to feel stiff. I did some stretching then decided I’ll stop spinning for the night. Tomorrow will be busy as it’s my last full day to spin until the following weekend because of work. I’ll of course spin when I get home from work though!

Tour de Fleece – Day One

Like last year, this year I am on three teams for the tour: Team Webs, Team Merlin Tree, and Team Loop.

I have a big stash of fiber so it’s always hard to choose which I am going to spin first. Last year I was subscribed to Spinning Box, which is a great subscription based product where you get sent samples from various venders, plus the main vendor Camaj fiber arts. I did a six month subscription but had not spun any of it yet. So I decided to spin up these boxes to start.

The first one I grabbed was from last August which was ocean themed (each month is themed). I wanted to spin the larger colorway from Camaj seperatly, but wasn’t sure about the rest. I decided to just spin them all one after the other and then ply it together and see what I got. I’m not sure what I think of the final product of that bunch, but I love how the Camaj spun up on it’s own.

This is all the others plied together.

This is the colorway “Sea Nymph” created by Camaj. I love, love, love how it spun up!

I have not set the twist yet so don’t have a yardage for them right now. Together, they weigh just under 10oz.

I don’t know which box I will be doing next, or if I’ll do a Loop bump next instead. We’ll see!
